What is Social Enterprise?

Maimonides’ “ladder of giving” will be our guiding text in learning about the Jewish laws of giving. In this workshop, participants learn about the difference between social enterprise and a traditional nonprofit, discuss “solutions privilege,” and dig into the role of equity in grantmaking. Participants will meet the founders of successful multi-million dollar social enterprises. They will be inspired to shop differently and learn entrepreneurial skills to inspire their own responses to social injustice.

Understanding Homelessness

Since the times of the prophets, we learn from Isaiah to “take the unsheltered into our homes.” We will learn about several nonprofits and social enterprises that are striving to have an impact on the issues of homelessness in Los Angeles. Supporting People with Diverse Abilities

In Genesis, we learn that we are all created in God's image, yet we all are different in looks and abilities. We will meet with various nonprofit founders and social enterprise professionals who create opportunities for children and adults with varying special needs. We will have the opportunity to ask hard questions and break our preconceived notions about “disabilities.” The program will conclude with a DIY lesson taught by a special guest.

Immigration Justice

The holiday of Passover reminds us to “not wrong a stranger or oppress them, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 22:20). Participants on this journey learn portrait art from an artist who is a US Citizen who immigrated from Mexico. We learn to cook a traditional dish, hear from government and nonprofit organizations that address the challenges faced by immigrants and refugees, and explore the relationship between commerce and citizenship.

Environmental Justice

Throughout the Torah, we are taught that we are partners with God in taking care of the Earth and that while the Earth is on loan to us, we do not own it. In this “Environmental Justice 101” program, participants are introduced to basic concepts in the struggle to preserve our environment. This experience includes meeting government officials active in this area and youth activists making a difference. Participants will be encouraged to become active in the political process.
