Garden School Foundation provides in-depth garden-based education to youth at Title I schools in Los Angeles, strengthening connections between food justice, environmental stewardship, and community health. By using the full transformative potential of school gardens as teaching sites, we nurture a healthy and mindful generation of children who care for their bodies, their communities, and the earth. We currently serve ten Title I elementary schools, reaching over 3,200 students and their families each year.
We host regular Community Garden Days at all GSF school sites on Saturdays periodically throughout the year. Our school families, service organizations, and volunteers come together to help plant, weed, water, mulch, enjoy demos/workshops, share a meal, and more! No garden experience needed and all ages are welcome. Students and their family and friends are invited to join us for these events! Students aged 11-12 years old must have an adult over the age of 18 accompanying them at the event. We will ask that the adult signs our volunteer waiver on behalf of the student prior to beginning garden work (during the check-in process on the day of the event).
We also accept in-kind donations of a variety of items. Garden supplies and tools, seeds, cooking utensils, and reusable bags are common items we need. If students are interested, they could coordinate a donation drive.
