Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
Volunteers must be 16+ to work with the animals, however, we do have a paid program called Rescue Readers that will offer some interaction with the animals.
Kids ages 5-15 (accompanied by an adult) can read aloud to our adoptable dogs and cats. In order to participate, readers of all ages must attend ONE of the orientation sessions. A parent/guardian must be present and engaged during all reading sessions and during the required orientation. One adult may oversee multiple children, but all will be required to stay together in each space. Participants must be at least 5 years old; no sibling tag along, please.
Reading to the animals is a therapeutic experience. When the animals first come to the shelter, they may be scared and agitated. By having volunteers come in and read to the animals, it teaches them that humans are good and it helps them acclimate to their new environment.
When reading to cats, they have free range. The cats may walk up and interact with you.
When reading to dogs, they will be inside of their kennels. This is for your safety.
You are required to attend an orientation session where you will:
- Learn about dog and cat behaviors
- Learn to recognize signs of stress
- Learn to provide a soothing and calming environment for shelter pets
- Review supplies, needs, and rules (note: we will not be reading during this orientation)
There is a $60 registration cost per child for the 7-week program, including the required orientation, training, and materials.
Peggy Adams also accepts book donations for this program.
