Each program has a customized virtual “field guide” which will include Jewish texts, statistics, and a reflection piece.

FOOD JUSTICE

We learn from the Torah that we should leave the corners of our fields for those who are hungry. In this workshop, we engaged with concepts of food insecurity in the United States. We will learn from activists, farmers, and experts in the field. We will learn about the importance of food sustainability with a pickling tutorial!

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Maimonides’ “ladder of giving” was our guiding text while learning about Jewish laws of giving. In this workshop, participants learned about the difference between a social enterprise and a traditional nonprofit.  Participants will meet the founder of a current social enterprise and the people that the social enterprise impacts.  Students will end their session with a trivia game and the opportunity to brainstorm their own social enterprises.  This session can be extended to a three-part series ending in a Shark Tank-esque activity.

UNDERSTANDING HOMELESSNESS

Since the times of the prophets, we learn from Isaiah to “take the unsheltered into our homes.” In this workshop, we considered the roots of homelessness and the current situation in America. We will hear from advocates, activists, and those with lived experiences facing the homeless epidemic.

HONORING OLDER ADULTS

Along with a higher vulnerability to the effects of the pandemic, older adults are also experiencing higher strains on their mental health during this period of isolation as many of them struggle to use the technology now required to connect to loved ones. During this session, we will have the privilege of learning with many different organizations that are building a meaningful intergenerational connection.  We will also hear from older adults with lived experience and talk about how to bring the learning home.

SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES

In Genesis, we learn that we are all created in God’s image, yet we all are different in looks and abilities. During this session, we will have the honor of learning from someone with lived experience and learn a lesson about how to draw cartoons.  We will also learn some ways we can add accessibility points to our own lives and communities.

IMMIGRATION JUSTICE

Almost all of our families have immigration stories. During this session, we will hear from someone with lived experience.  We will learn how to cook a special dish from another culture and maybe have the chance to learn how to draw a portrait from an amazing portrait artist whose story is not to be missed.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Pollution and climate change have tremendous risks to people’s health and disproportionately affect those already experiencing inequities. During this session, we explored environmental issues and their interconnectedness to food justice and racial justice. We will have the privilege of hearing from activists who will teach us how to take a deep dive into the work of healing our earth.
